ABSTRACT

This chapter shifts the attention from the political, economic, and organizational structure to the more micro perspective of the changes to journalists and their community. Charting the reduction in the numbers of journalists and the passing of the golden age of journalism, it interrogates the polarization of the journalistic workforce in the newsroom, the different aims and attitudes of the new and older generations of journalistic workers, and the changes in the morale of journalists and their community in the digital age. It argues that the Chinese journalists’ community is experiencing a “generational shift,” reflected in the passing of the “golden age” generation and the coming of new journalists of the digital generation.
