ABSTRACT

Having delineated the foundational features of Pakistan's identity process and national role conceptions in the previous chapter, chapter 4 turns to identifying national role conceptions (NRCs). Applying interpretive phenomenological analysis to the dataset, it identifies NRCs for Pakistan and its three significant others, India, the United States and China. Each role is explained separately for each country, then all NRCs are brought together to identify role salience for each country. Within the research timeframe, the analysis identifies six roles for Pakistan, seven for India, five for the United States and nine for China. These NRCs are the basis for the remaining chapters of the book to apply the socialization-as-role-compatibility framework to each bilateral relation.
