ABSTRACT

My next effort (Chapter 4) is a broad attempt to locate Spinoza in his time and place, not only in 17th-century Amsterdam, but also within the sociopolitical currents of church and synagogue doctrine and power, both in the Iberian Peninsula and locally. Heavily dependent on 20th and early 21st century Spinoza studies, this chapter serves as my pivot toward recognizing the Jewish textual bases of Spinoza's radical philosophy.
