ABSTRACT

One component of almost every form of writing in psychology is mastery of the relevant research literature. This chapter discusses how to achieve such mastery. Three topics are addressed: how to find sources, how to evaluate sources, and how to record what is learned from sources. The how-to-find section discusses various approaches; its main emphasis, however, is on how to use PsycInfo, the most important electronic database for research in psychology. The how-to-evaluate section discusses both the most trustworthy sources (typically peer-reviewed journal articles) and sources that are often considerably less trustworthy. A special emphasis is on the differential reliability of different internet sources.
