ABSTRACT

Manga is hand-drawn Japanese graphic art that tells a story, predominantly in black and white. Text is minimal and the genre relies heavily on visual imagery to tell the story (Fig. 4.2). The subject matter varies, and the audience is carefully targeted to appeal to different groups of Japanese society. Genres and sub-genres are vast. Manga can be found in Japanese culture as far back as 1200, in the form of hand painted scrolls. There are a number of noted artists who are recognized as the innovators of manga as we know it today.
