ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the terms frequently – and imprecisely – used to characterise the location of work. It has been common for politicians, commentators, and practitioners to refer to the need for people to work from home if they can. However, workers have actually been advised to limit their mobility; that is, to work at home and not to venture from the home if at all possible. The easing of coronavirus restrictions has led to more spatial movement with ‘remote working’ often used to describe work which can be carried out in a variety of places outside the premises of the employer. ‘Hybrid working’, too, has become popularly discussed and captures the idea that employees are enabled to work part of the time on the employer’s premises and part of the time off-site either at home or anywhere of their choosing.
