ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the book, highlighting the need for a pedagogical approach that accounts for the complexity in acquiring movement coordination from an ecological dynamics perspective. Motor learning in the 21st century will be contextualised by examining some of the myths, opportunities and challenges for skill acquisition that exist in modern society. Globally, societies face ‘wicked problems’, defined as huge challenges which impact on the lives of ordinary people. One such challenge educators and health professionals faced is in enhancing the skills of individual people and their opportunities for participation in physical activities and sports throughout their lifespan. Importantly, this chapter frames the discussion of a Nonlinear Pedagogy for the rest of the chapters in this book.
