ABSTRACT

Chapter Five explores the divisions and fractures which have been created within segregated and unequal societies and attempts which have been made to understand and to ‘heal’ those divisions. It considers attempts to mitigate the effects of institutional racism in ‘race’ awareness in the 1970s through to the critique of multiculturalism which emerged at the turn of the century, explaining and critically engaging with agendas of ‘community cohesion’ which have been posited as a solution. The chapter looks at the increasing diversity within and between neighbourhoods and communities which has characterised many places as a result of recent patterns of migration and at responses to these changes.
