ABSTRACT

Globalization has become another ontological reality or social fact, which consciously or unconsciously influences human way of life and circumstances. This chapter explains the links between globalization and health, and some of the significant manifestations of globalization’s impacts on health. The chapter begins with the conceptualization of global health and examines the many faces of globalization of health. Global health is defined as a way of understanding population health and healthcare within a global context. Global health serves as a bridge, linking the South and North but with unequal power and benefits. The chapter then examines the various manifestations of the impacts of the globalization of health. Such manifestations discussed include globalization of health risks/vulnerabilities, globalization of lifestyle diseases, globalization of healthcare, globalization of health technology, globalization of health indicators and targets, globalization of health policies and partnerships, globalization of medicalization and globalization of health rights.
