ABSTRACT

Health is contextual in the sense that there are myriad factors, regarded as social determinants of health (SDH) influencing it. Some of those factors even constitute the causes of diseases because they exact direct influence on the likelihood of ill-health. Globalization is another dominant social reality, which has been implicated as a significant determinant of health. The un-equalizing process of globalization manifests in the poor social determinants and the exploitative global determinants of health. The chapter examines social determinants, which explain the uneven distribution of diseases among individuals and countries, global determinants of health, which operate to accentuate some health crisis in the South. The global determinants of health examined include economic regulation and health markets, the global flow of people and information, global culture and health, environmental change and challenges, health technology transfer and exchange and global politics and policies of healthcare, among others.
