ABSTRACT

This chapter examines migration patterns made possible through globalization and how migration has become a public or global health issue, and therefore how it is responsible for various health challenges. The health of migrants is a global health discourse because migration status is a strong determinant of health. This chapter examines the most worrisome dimension of migration of global health importance: Forced migration. The dimension includes human smuggling, trafficking and displacement, with their accompanying severe humanitarian and health crises. The “push factors” in the Global South, especially conflict and other development challenges, have a lot to do with globalization through the economic interests and military activities of the Global North. Therefore, the chapter focuses on the migration–health nexus. This chapter examines how the (difficult) circumstances that migrants face impact on their health. This chapter also discusses the global health reasons to provide appropriate health services to all migrants.
