ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to examine the intersections of disability, sport, and physical activity. The author first defines disability and then describes the way disability status influences access and treatment discrimination to the work environment, as well as in sport activities. The following section includes examination of the multilevel factors that influence the effects of disability in the work environment. Factors affecting people with disabilities in the sport working environment include macro-level factors, such as employment laws, structural stigma, and stakeholder expectations; meso-level factors, including bias in decision-making, policies, champions, and organizational capacity; and micro-level factors, such as demographics, requests for accommodations, and type of disability.
