ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to examine the intersection of religion, sport, and physical activity. The author first defines religion and then examines the influence of religion in the sport work environment, as well as in sport activities. Next, the author summarizes a multilevel model explaining these effects. Macro-level factors include social norms, the presence of similar others, and community religiosity. At the meso-level, bias in decision-making, organizational culture, and leadership are salient. Finally, micro-level factors include demographics, religious identity, and psychological characteristics.
