ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to summarize approaches to reducing bias. The author first identifies different approaches to reducing bias: cognitive and emotional training; value consistency and self-worth; peer influence, discussion, and dialogue; social categorization; intergroup contact; imagined contact; and entertainment. Next, analysis of their effects shows that most of the strategies are likely to result in small changes to people’s biases, with some of them producing small to moderate reductions. Light touch approaches to bias reduction contributes to the small effects. Finally, the author overviews strategies sport managers can use to reduce bias in their work environment. The most effective approaches to bias reduction combine the following principles: engage people in continued bias reduction and learning opportunities, offering varied options throughout the year, and facilitating accountability.
