ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to summarize strategies for creating and sustaining diverse and inclusive sport organizations. The author first identifies the pressures for creating an inclusive sport work environment, including the community in which the sport organization is situated and pressures for deinstitutionalization (i.e., political, functional, and social pressures). Next, the author overviews barriers to creating an inclusive sport work environment, including those at the individual and organizational levels. The final section of the chapter includes a summary factor influencing the diversity and inclusiveness of a sport organization: the diversity climate, leader behaviors, allies, the sport organization’s commitment to diversity, educational activities, and human resource practices. Importantly, these factors should work in concert with one another, such that diversity and inclusion is well integrated throughout the organizational system.
