ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to summarize ways in which people conduct diversity and inclusion research. The author begins by summarizing the differences between common sense and science. The discussion then moves to the different ways of knowing, including tenacity, authority, a priori knowledge, and the method of science. The final section includes a summary of steps to conduct diversity and inclusion research. Social scientists gain a better understanding of diversity and inclusion by (1) developing research objectives; (2) identifying the theory and developing hypotheses or research questions; (3) selecting the appropriate methods; (4) collecting and analyzing data; (5) discussing the results and forming conclusions; and (6) distributing the findings.
