ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to examine the intersection of race and sport. The author first defines race and ethnicity and then summarizes the representation of racially minoritized people in leadership positions in sport. Racially minoritized people lack access to key leadership position in sport. Many minoritized people also experience treatment discrimination via differential experiences, opportunities, promotions, and pay. The author paraphrases opportunities and experiences in sport and physical activity for people from different racial groups and then summarizes the macro-, meso-, and micro-level factors that influence the access to and participation in sport. Macro-level factors include systemic racism, political climate, and stakeholder expectations. Meso-level factors include bias in decision-making, organizational culture, and diversity policies. Finally, micro-level factors include capital investments, self-limiting behaviors, and personal identity.
