ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to examine the intersection of age and sport. The author defines age and age diversity and then describes the manner in which age influences the sport work environment, as well as their access to and experiences in sport as athletes. The discussion then moves to a multilevel model to explain these effects. Macro-level factors (i.e., changing demographics and work patterns, and systemic ageism), meso-level factors (i.e., bias in decision decision-making and organizational policies), and micro-level factors (i.e., personal characteristics and age in context) all influence age-related access and experiences in sport organizations.
