ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses bodily reactions to film. We, for example, feel itching in our foot soles when we watch someone climb a wall in a film. Some films that do not stimulate the intellect, activate the body. Through a presentation of the role of bodily reactions in film, I aim to present my conception of “somatic film,”film where bodily reactions are central. The phenomenon is maybe more dominant than what we have so far understood. How consciously do we use film for somatic reasons? And, how can brain research explain our reactions to film?
