ABSTRACT
British political thinking about empire was decisively influenced by the loss of the American colonies in the eighteenth century. In the following period there was little enthusiasm for colonies in Whitehall. It was felt that they cost money and brought little advantage, that they were bound to become independent in the course of time, and that when the demand for independence became strong it should be granted.
