ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the thematic scope, structural set-up and essential functioning of the umbrella organization in charge of coordinating the anti-treaty protests, encompassing demonstrations, rallies, strikes, etc. The very breadth of popular organizations affiliating to this body notwithstanding, its management was strictly hierarchical, with real power concentrated in the hands of the established left, crucially the socialist-oriented trade union confederation. Then follows a description of, on the one hand, the specific movement pattern, that is, its cyclical configuration, informed by a generally rising trend, albeit unevenly; and, on the other, movement peaks spread over the roughly 18-month-long treaty events.
