ABSTRACT

Chadō uses various kinds of utensils for a tea gathering. Each of them is unique, original, and has an in depth design or style, yet all utensils harmonize together. By sharing some practitioners’ thoughts on utensils, this chapter first introduces how they appreciate and choose the appropriate utensils according to the current season, the type of occasion, and the level of formality of the event. Artisans pay great attention to design and create a one-of-a-kind form of artwork for a tea gathering. This chapter then proceeds to share artisans’ voices regarding their training style and their successor issues. This chapter also describes how these utensils are still related to status to a certain extent.
