ABSTRACT

When guests are invited for the tea gatherings, they are first guided to the tea garden, then to the tea house. Hamuro Rin, a novelist in Japan often used a tea room as the stage for revealing clues of mysterious stories through guests’ dialogues. He argues that the space of a tea room provides the atmosphere to reveal our inner feelings (Hamuro 2017). This chapter will have a closer look at the meaning behind the garden and tea house and explore why most guests would sense that they wanted to share their thoughts in a tea room. By looking at several elements of secret codes within the garden and tea house, this chapter will also introduce modern tea houses.
