ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we begin by defining critical terms including artificial intelligence, machine learning, general and superior artificial intelligence, and singularity. We then describe emerging ethical issues associated with granting agency to artificial intelligence, including whether an AI can be taught to think independently and make its own ethical decisions. The chapter then considers methods for establishing human responsibility for AI decision-making processes, including the concept of meaningful human control (MHC). Finally, it describes ethical arguments related to the value of authenticity as an obstacle to the further development of artificial intelligence. Discussion questions allow students to formulate their own opinions in relation to ethical issues raised in this chapter. The use of AI in the provision of cybersecurity, including granting agency to AI to hunt for and respond to cyber vulnerabilities, is introduced and considered.
