ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we describe the major ethical issues associated with data storage and data sharing when working with Big Data – including issues of informed consent. We also describe the major ethical issues associated with using Big Data for decision-making, including issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. This chapter defines critical terms associated with Big Data, including qualitative and quantitative data, structured and unstructured data, raw data and open-source data, and customized and aggregate data. Finally, this chapter compares and contrasts ethical positions regarding whether data is best understood as an individual or a collective good. Students consider how data architecture, data storage, and transformation engineering decisions can all have ethical components and ethical impacts downstream.
