ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we apply the three frameworks – virtue, deontological, and utilitarian – to describe privacy ethics. Students are led to consider how privacy norms and practices have evolved temporally and within differing social, historical, and economic contexts. Students consider whether privacy is an outmoded concept and how new technologies are shaping our understanding of the ethics regarding data privacy. Students encounter the European Union General Data Protection Regulation and laws governing user privacy in the Canadian and American contexts. Insets consider the privacy ethics governing student data and workers’ rights to have privacy in the workplace.
