ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the characteristics of Highland’s success before applying these ideas to public education. The sense of mission which has perdured through the years at Highland drives its organizational arrangements and interactions. The people of Highland have striven to provide a quality Montessori education and a nurturing environment for the diverse families from the West Side who have become its members. Highland places great weight on attracting and holding a balance of culturally and economically diverse families from the neighborhood. Community at Highland results from the intense participation of all its members and from the overt practice of three other interconnected values. The Montessori pedagogy places special emphasis on developing the young child’s sense of independence as the doorway to a high quality of life.
