ABSTRACT

The introduction presents the rationale for the book and outlines the structure and content of each subsequent chapter. The book addresses the consequences of male anger, emotional mutism, and insecurity. It helps teachers to deal strategically and empathetically with pupils’ anger. The book looks at inclusivity in schools and examines reasons why Black-African/Caribbean boys and Gypsy, Romany, or Traveller boys are excluded in disproportionately high numbers. The book presents teachers with ways to discuss self-harm and suicide responsibly and appropriately. It presents the damaging effects of peer pressure and of so-called banter, exploring the need for men and boys to talk more and develop healthy friendships. LGBTQ+ contributors shine a light on the complex relationship between masculinity and LGBTQ+ identity. Case studies from PE departments in schools present solutions to challenge ‘toxic changing room’ cultures. The book interrogates body image and the prevalence of eating disorders, including ‘Bigorexia’, in boys and men who aspire to a media-driven masculine ideal. The book discusses the problematic attitudes towards sex and females arising from accessible pornography being viewed by adolescents, and advocates the teaching of Porn Literacy in schools.
