ABSTRACT

Anecdotes detailing students’ negative experiences of Physical Education (PE) lessons frame this chapter, which seeks to help schools ensure that all boys, regardless of perceived ability, increase their engagement with physical activity in school. Statistics around the positive impact of physical activity on mental and emotional wellbeing are presented. Barriers which prevent boys from engaging proactively in physical activity during their time at school are clearly explained. An interview with Chris Wright from The Youth Sport Trust reveals some surprising information – in many cases male PE teachers can be detrimental to boys’ engagement with physical education at school. The chapter examines reasons for lack of engagement then offers advice on aspects of improving engagement at schools. The chapter covers the controversial topic of ability streaming in PE lessons. It proposes how schools can tackle the toxic changing room cultures that still exist in many schools. The chapter draws heavily on advice and accounts from PE teachers working in schools and also academics, consultants, and writers who are experts in increasing engagement with sports and physical activity in schools. It highlights the truly life-changing positive impact that physical activity has on a young person’s life.
