ABSTRACT

This opening chapter introduces the focus of the book on the mutual prosperity agenda in UK aid and the case analysis of three multinational corporations (MNCs) headquartered in, or with close ties to the UK. This case focus is situated in the context of the private sector turn in official development assistance (ODA) and debates about private sector engagement in ODA. After further introduction to the UK case context and private sector approaches and modalities in ODA, the overall structure of the book is set out. First, theorising within corporate social responsibility literature on the MNC-development relationship is introduced, along with a synopsis of how this is extended to ODA. The empirical and analytical approach is then summarised before concluding with a synopsis of the overarching findings.
