ABSTRACT

This final case chapter focuses on Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) and its alcoholic beverages (mainly beer) portfolio in Mozambique and South Africa and the potential alignment with UK official development assistance (ODA) goals in these case country contexts. This case concludes the empirical analysis that underpins the subsequent review of the complex quest for mutually beneficial outcomes for donor, MNC and donor recipients through private sector approaches in UK ODA. The case shows how AB InBev’s (and formerly SABMiller) long-term engagement with the issue of farming, sustainable agriculture and water conservation has enabled it to have a powerful voice and leadership stance on these issues in national and international development arenas. Consequently, the case spans a range of business case, development case and critical case perspectives. The final part of the case explores two critical issues in further detail: first AB InBev’s leadership position and agenda-setting capacity arising from its investment in sustainable agriculture and water stewardship. Second, AB InBev’s engagements with governments, arising from this strategic agenda and but also in relation to managing the regulatory aspects of the alcohol industry.
