ABSTRACT

The dream can be used for a double and contrary purpose. The patient uses his dreams almost deliberately to avoid expressing what is fundamentally in his mind. The patient’s comments about these dreams were very sketchy, far less abundant and comprehensive than usual. The session is recorded to show that the patient like many others has dissociated the world of unconscious phantasy from his ego, his conscious world. When he approached the woman for the purpose of gratification or the relief of tension, as he did on the evening to which he refers. His relief was not possible in a pleasurable way, not possible unmingled with enormous castration anxiety, and this castration anxiety threatened to thwart all his pleasures and all his aims and to keep him from marriage and a satisfactory solution to his life. This anxiety springs from this very region of the unconscious to which his dreams also belong.
