ABSTRACT

Money is a part of the psyche and therefore a part of the analysis itself. This chapter describes the importance of the identification of patient’s money with himself and its analytical significance. The blind spot is the monetary relationship of patient and analyst. On the question of money his own interests are touched and he adopts the usual defensive methods common to all. It will be readily agreed that any such defensive measure is the antithesis of analysis and must inevitably ensure the preservation of at least some portion of the psyche from analytical investigation. He began by adopting the somewhat unconscious defence of plunging into analytical material. After that he took recourse to an adverse criticism of the progress of his analysis, first suggesting that he should “give it a rest” and then adding that he did not feel that would be any answer.
