Roger Ascham, of Kirby Wiske, Northallerton, North Yorkshire, was an author and royal tutor. Ascham matriculated from St John’s College, Cambridge, in 1530 where he developed his knowledge of Greek under the guidance of John Cheke. Ascham did not come from a wealthy family and much of the later 1530s and 1540s was spent in seeking patronage and modestly paid academic employment, coupled with recurrent bouts of bad health.
