ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with in-work development – the Get On stage of the career journey, ensuring that support workers are able to work at the top of their scope of practice safely and effectively. It stresses the importance of appraisals and development plans and describes the learning opportunities available to support workers, particularly apprenticeships. As well as formal learning, the role of learning cultures is also discussed. The evidence of the benefits of effective people management is considerable – for employees, their employers and organisation outcomes. The importance of ensuring inclusive workplaces that value equality and diversity is discussed.
