ABSTRACT

On-boarding is a process that starts with recruitment and selection and ends a year or so after appointment and includes but is not limited to induction. For support workers on-boarding includes completion of The Care Certificate, statutory and mandatory training, and had their first appraisal and Personal Development Plan. This period allows staff to orientate themselves to the organisation and for employers to be assured that new employee have the right values and capabilities to deliver quality health care. Getting on-boarding right means providing a supportive environment for new starters and ensuring realities of work meet expectations. Poor experiences in the initial period of employment is a significant reason for turnover. New models of recruitment, called job brokerage, are emerging in the NHS that are linked to local labour markers and work with external agencies to identify, support and screen potential candidates for support roles.
