ABSTRACT

The final chapter in Section I is Chapter 5, “Conceptualizing the Client: Diagnosis and Related Issues.” This chapter assists you in conceptualizing your client’s case and diagnosing using the DSM-5, if necessary. The main emphasis of Chapter 5 is to create a better understanding of the steps involved in case conceptualization and treatment. This chapter:

Integrates the self-regulation skill of daily exercise for self-care.

Offers strategies for case conceptualization: stages of the interview, clinical diagnosis, and developmental assessment.

Describes examples of DSM-5 diagnoses with examples.

The “Case of Rachel” illustrates case conceptualization using the three strategies: emphasizing case presentation, goal-setting, and treatment plans.
