ABSTRACT
Russian social and political thought in the nineteenth century is of high interest and importance on two counts. It inspired one of the great creative periods of modern literature; and it forms the background of the Russian revolution of 1917. Its significance in the second context has been increased by the recent tendency to dwell on the continuity of Russian history before and after the revolution rather than on the break in continuity which was the theme of the first revolutionary writers and historians.
