ABSTRACT

This chapter follows the story of a middle aged Mildred Trotter who suddenly found herself on a US island territory in the Pacific, identifying the remains of World War II casualties, writing harsh critiques of military processes to Army colonels, and undertaking the most comprehensive stature estimation project of the time. This involves information about her consulting as an anthropology expert for US identification of war dead at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii and additional appointments related to the USS Oklahoma and Cabantatuan. In addition to these duties, this chapter outlines her process and approvals required to perform her seminal research providing formulas for estimating antemortem stature from the lengths of bones.
