ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the dispute between doxasticism and nondoxasticism about propositional faith. Following a review of the debate, a range of non-doxastic propositional attitudes are considered and the transparency condition is proposed as the best way of distinguishing these from belief. It is argued that the formulation of doxastic and non-doxastic theories of faith hitherto presented in the literature fail to fully explicate the important points of disagreement between these positions. A novel formulation is proposed that better captures the main points of difference between them while preserving what we take to be the principal theoretical commitment of doxasticism, namely, the necessary connection between propositional faith and belief.
