ABSTRACT

This chapter assesses the leading arguments in favour of nondoxasticism and shows that they are unsuccessful. The discussion focusses on four arguments. First, that belief but not faith is truth evaluable. Second, that faith but not belief is compatible with the doubts that are commonly experienced concerning the objects of faith. Third, that mental state attributions in ordinary language show that faith is possible without belief. Fourth, that faith propositions can be assumed for pragmatic reasons without being believed.
