ABSTRACT

The ancient well-field system was excellent. Once the boundaries of fields were established, myriad things were all initiated: people had a steady occupation, soldiers did not have difficulty in recruiting men, and all among the noble and the base as well as those people in the higher social statuses and in the lower social statuses gained proper occupations without exception. Because the possession of field and the imposition of military duty are already separated, people who play tricks to evade their duties are numerous, and the government undergoes commotions of searching for adult males who owe military service. The equal-field system of the Tang period in China resembled the ancient intent of devising a well-field system. The equal-field systems of Tang China and Koryo had people as the basic concept when counting adult males and distributing fields.
