ABSTRACT

The two homes on Stevens Street in Opelika, Alabama, were built over two consecutive years via design-build studios and community service classes in the College of Architecture, Design and Construction at Auburn University. The two homes are identical plans and are built two doors apart on a suburban street. The first home was built to meet the requirements of the Passive House Institute US certification standard, and the second home was built to the US Department of Energy’s Zero Energy Ready Home standard. A team of research faculty at Auburn monitored post occupancy energy use on both homes to compare the cost of construction and cost of operation associated with the two homes.
