ABSTRACT

In Chapter 1, a critical conceptualisation is developed based on hybridity (through contributions from sociology, anthropology, performance and reenactment studies and gender studies, among other fields of knowledge) centered on some binomials and controversies underlying the “history” and “ontology” of performance art. These binomials, what are considered, will be based on some specificities of the performative genre, such as the notions of performance and performativity; ephemerality and cyclicality; visibility and invisibility; transgression and risk versus the “integration” of performance art into the art market. The last of these binomials will be geographic and will discuss the contemporary relationships and intersections between centers and peripheries, allowing this artistic expression in Portugal to be framed in an international and global context.
