The populist press: Conservatism, ‘common sense ’ and culture wars

It’s no longer particularly controversial to talk of the ‘Tory press’. But would it also be helpful to describe Tory papers as populist, or indeed authoritarian populist? And, if so, what more does it tell us about the political and ideological tenor of those newspapers? Professor Julian Petley
