ABSTRACT

The National Health Service (NHS) was established in the UK in 1948 to provide healthcare free at the point of access to the UK population. The NHS Plan and accompanying command paper alluded to the introduction of new managerialism. The Mid Staffordshire General Hospital NHS Trust was established in 1993. The hospitals served a population of approximately 276,500 in the county of Staffordshire in central England. Rotherham makes up one of the four boroughs of the county of South Yorkshire in England and comprises of urban and rural areas as well as the main town. Interestingly, fears that the Child Sexual Exploitation scandal in the borough would result in gains for the British National Party proved unfounded and the marginal party has no sitting councillors. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
