ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief background to the COVID-19 pandemic and the application of the theoretical update to Max Weber and Weber inspired theorists including professional indoctrination, regulatory insufficiency, acts of violence, human fragility and sensory deprivation. Zygmund Bauman was concerned that modern citizens were uniquely vulnerable because they had given up their right to use physical violence. The response to the COVID-19 pandemic has further contributed to the deprofessionalisation of healthcare clinicians. The response to the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the suspension of parliamentary democracy and an increase in authoritarianism as governments around the world have seized the opportunities to suspend democratic freedoms, seize emergency powers and erode human rights. The rule of law has been suspended in many areas since the COVID-19 pandemic. The response to the COVID-19 pandemic including the use of lockdowns has had a profound impact on UK citizens and increased a sense of atomisation.
