ABSTRACT

Much engineering work is engaged in the production of textile machinery and power plant for the mills, and many services, particularly in the distributive trades and road transportation, together with building, are developed largely to supply the needs of workers in the woollen and worsted and associated industries. To a considerable extent, therefore, West Yorkshire is dependent upon the prosperity of one group of associated industries. The whole of the post-war period has been one of rapid technical, economic, and social change, and the industrial structure of West Yorkshire has undergone considerable modification. There has been a slight increase during the last twelve years in the proportion of females to males in West Yorkshire industry. Reference has already been made to the loss of foreign trade, and the consequent tendency to adapt industry more to the needs of the home market.
