ABSTRACT

The localized industries mainly give West Yorkshire its industrial character, and are not merely localized in the area but also tend to be concentrated in certain centres within the area. The distinction between localized and non-localized industries is not always sharp. Coal-mining is inevitably localized where the coal measures are found, but tailoring might be distributed in many centres, although in West Yorkshire it is highly concentrated in Leeds. Wool and worsted textile manufacture, together with the associated dyeing and finishing industry and clothing manufacture, form the chief localized industrial group in West Yorkshire. Road transportation includes regular tramway and omnibus services as well as other transportation of passengers, cartage and haulage of goods by road, and motor garage services. The industry has expanded rapidly throughout the post-war period and has had a relatively low rate of unemployment even during the depression.
