ABSTRACT

The burden of unemployment largely varies with the length of time a person is out of work. Short periods of unemployment extending over a few weeks, with reasonable prospects of soon obtaining a new job, do not present as great economic and social difficulties as a prolonged period extending for months or even years. Short periods involve much less deterioration of skill and aptitude for work, and have much less effect upon the workers' morale than extended periods of unemployment. The statistics show separately the duration of unemployment for men, women, young men and boys, and young women and girls. Few women were unemployed except for short periods, the total number unemployed for six months or more being quite small, while prolonged unemployment among juveniles was negligible. It should be noted that the figures considerably understate the amount of prolonged unemployment.
